The maximum speed on any car depends on how capable you are in pressing the pedal on the metal.. Tomcar is no less than any othe rin the market.

I have a 47g (4 seater) with the 1000cc, 3cyc. Top speed is 37mph up or down hill !! But also that means 37mph over anything!! It would be nice to have more top end on the road. But,faster is not always better!!

My 06 TM27G with the 953 3 cylinder Daihatsu, top speed when new was just over 40mph. With the blue stage CVT it runs at 45mph.
It has different final drive gearing to the TM47:
The 47 used 13:38
The 27 used 13:34

Which means that the TM27 is approx 10% faster (at same rpm) than the TM47

Spiny: Is there any way to get rpm's out of the Daihatsu that you know of ? I've made adjustments to the governor,(little) I've thougth of different ways with the gears. But you have to look at cost = speed. Sofar the best way i've come up with is new engine.( 4cyc) Like the new 2010 tomcars.

This is serious guys, but I've experienced riding in it so fast that the hand of the speedometer was going over max. Guess what made it possible.

I think the speed of these cars are really unpredictable. Guts of the driver is the limit. I would rather go with the tough roads, the humps of up and down is more interesting for me.

This vehicles have good speeds, good thing it has safety features built on it. But you still need to be really careful every time you drive.

Yeah. More than the safety built-on of the vehicle the driver must as well really be careful as He drives. We can't really tell when accidents happen.

The fastest rate I've ever been on a Tomcar is 35-40. That's it. And that's on off road terrains. When I'm in the road or city, I don't really pay much attention to the speed since I won't be able to check it thoroughly because of all the traffic.

Hi kimoglobin! Well, 35-40 was not that bad, isn't it? But I just want to ask, what about its gas consumption? Is it high? Do you have any tips or advices on how to save gas? Since the price of fuel nowadays was quite high.

Michael,
If you are is a US model it may be an LSV version which was restricted to 25mph to comply with the legal requirements for a 'Low Speed Vehicle". the VIN number would begin with '1T9' is it was an LSV.

An easy way to check is to remove the drive belt and gently rev the engine. The CVT should close completely. If it closes only about half way then the speed restriction spacer is probably still inside the CVT.

Hi there. I'm not really that sure about the gas consumption now but its okay. There's a post here in this forum that tells something about Tomcar's gas consumption if you want to know more about it.

One of the cars is a LSV, one is not. Is there a way to make the LSV model quicker. I noticed the belt in the LSV is narrower then the other. Other then that they look the same.
Thanks for your help

joe,

Have you actually looked into this? I'm seriously considering it. I've got Toy Junkies looking into the feasability of an engine swap for the new '10 gas engine. The electrical system would have to be completely redone, and while I'm at it, I'd like to get the '10 brake systems installed, as well (which I've heard are much better than the earlier models.

It may not be possible - Tomcar's initial response to this was that it would be cheaper to buy a new car...but that doesn't make any sense to me. Can't be true. Toyjunkies in able to swap out the engine for a 120hp Yamaha for about $8 grand. That aint cheap - but I would think it would be even cheaper to swap out an earlier engine for the '10 engine, since Tomcar has all the necessary components to do so.

If it can be done for measurably less than the swap Toy Junkies does with the snowmobile engine, I'd do it for sure.

I agree completely that the TM47G's top speed of around 37 is perfectly sufficient for trails, and much faster than I ride on the trails I like to ride. Still, if I could get the non-trail riding top-speed up to 50 - 55mph, this car would be the perfect UTV, in my opinion.

delm: I did look in to the engine swap. with the new 2010s. the cost is to much at this time. to many new parts, also their may be some bugs still to work out with the swap. I can not find a way to pull this off, to off set the cost.... At this time i will stay on the trails and be happy. You are right,it would be the perfect utv.

Agreed - not shabby. Going all-out fast can certainly be fun, but I find that I'm going 3 - 10 mph on most of the trails where I find myself. For the longer, straight stretches, I appreciate a nice top speed.

My new record is 43 mph, on a paved, straight road.

Dom,

I'm in Gilbert. Always nice to run into another AZ tomcar owner. Joe Atkins (also in this thread) and I met up via this forum and did a Crown King ride together. Had a blast. If you're ever up for pulling together a tomcar ride, just let me know!

I would be interested to know how high your drive belt is running on your engine CVT when it is fully closed. If the belt runs like mine did previously the blue stage CVT mods may get your car above 50. My 2006 27G max speed went from 40 to 47mph with the blue stage CVT mod and belt tension tweeking :).

honestly I never looked at it I have replaced the belt but never adjusted it
whatever the factory set the distance is what its still at

Had an interesting conversation with somebody at Tomcar recently. He told me of a Tomcar dealer in Georgia that is taking the new Diesel version Tomcar and putting a turbo on it. Guess this is a mod that this dealership plans on doing regularly, and then adding about $8grand to the price of the Tomcar for the complete package.

A bit pricey, but that would be a fun Tomcar. I'd love to have the torque that I assume the diesel has, and the topend that the turbo likely gives it!

I should have added that I've got the blue-stage clutch on mine. Mine is an '07 TM47G. I was previously topping out at exactly 37 mph. After I got the blue-stage clutch, I still topped out at exactly 37 mph.

I did notice an immediate, significant improvement in acceleration, with the new clutch. But my top-end speed didn't edge up 1mph.

Then, I replaced my rear OEM tires with much lighter tires, and my top speed went up immediately to 43mph (hit 43.9, per my Lowrance, today). I'd heard that it takes some mileage before breaking in the new clutch and getting maximum performance out of it, so I don't know if my clutch finally kicked in just as I got the new tires, or if the speed increase was because of the new tires. Just know that the increased speed is suddently there, and it's noticeable.

ya but when does the expense get not worth it
problem is on gasoline (not sure about diesel) the computer has a rev limiter in them and at a certain rpm, thats when the engine cuts out, so if the diesel is the same way you will get more torque certainly but the top speed wont change.

With your new blue stage clutch, it is still very important that the drive belt tension is set at the optimum. If it is too tight the belt wont ride at the max diameter on the engine CVT giving you low top end. If it is too loose then it will not drop deep enough into your driven CVT again reducing your top end.

Great to see some people posting on here. I check in now and then, but there was never much activity. I have a TM25 with the FI Kohler engine (which I'm going to be selling), a TM27 with the 953 Dahatsu gas and a TM47 with the Yamaha Vector engine. The 25 is much quicker than the 27 and has a higher top speed. The 25 can get up to about 47 on pavement and has no mods. I always wondered if the blue clutch would make any difference on any of them.

I live in Goodyear and would love to go riding with you guys sometime. We do a lot of riding in Parker, AZ but I have always wanted to do the Crown King trip. I have never been there, so I need a guide. :D

Folks,

If you are interested, send me an email to davidelm@live.com so that I can start gathering an email distribution list of AZ tomcar owners.

I've got Joe's email address, as well as Hummer1's (also here on this forum). If Dom and Apollosg are interested, send me an email and I'll put together an email distribution list and send it out to all of us.

Then, I'd like to start scheduling rides, and whoever can come - great!

Along these same lines, I've been in communication with Tomcar, and they are interested in participating (and sponsoring, to some extent) an AZ Tomcar Club. Some Tomcar staff will be on the Sedone ride on Oct. 2nd, and perhaps they'll be talking about this.

In any case - if you are interested, pop me an email and I'll pull together that email distribution list of the handful of us on this forum that may get out for a ride together every now and then.

Later,

David

I have a 2011 TM27G stock... 4 cyl fuel injected

Flat out, level street... bouncing off the limiter... Indicated is 49 but actual GPS is 44.9.

Yes Delm, thanks to you... I installed a GPS (portable one that is)

I'll be at Stonyford, CA tomorrow. I doubt I'll see these speeds there.
